Audio Guide Saint-Florent
app, one-time €4.99
Saint-Florent is a small Corsican port town where Genoese fortifications meet some of the Mediterranean's most unspoiled coastline. The Citadel has watched over the gulf since 1440, while just beyond town lies the Désert des Agriates, a vast protected wilderness whose name is a misnomer: it was once Corsica's breadbasket.

01
Citadel of Saint-Florent
Built in 1440 by the Doge of Genoa, this circular fortress once housed a chapel and prisons, and it was here that Pascal Paoli passed through during his 1795 exile. The site it stands on had already seen Neolithic dolmens and statue-menhirs long before any Genoese stone was laid.

02
Cathedral of Saint Mary of Nebbio
Raised by Pisan builders between 1121 and 1140, this compact white-limestone church served as the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Nebbio for over six centuries before the diocese was abolished in 1789. It still holds the relics of Saint Flor.

03
Old Port of Saint-Florent
Founded by the Genoese in 1440 alongside the town itself, the port remained a fishing and trading hub until a proper marina was only officially created in 1965. It earned a Blue Flag in 2016 and is the departure point for boats into the Agriates coast.

04
Agriates Desert
Despite the name, this 15,000-hectare landscape is not a desert but a terrain shaped by agricultural abandonment: the word comes from the Latin 'ager,' meaning cultivated field, because it fed Corsica with cereals, olives, and figs until the 19th century. It now shelters one of the wildest coastlines in the western Mediterranean.

05
Saleccia Beach
In 1961, film crews chose this stretch of white sand to double for Normandy in the war film 'The Longest Day,' and the resemblance was convincing enough. Less well known is that in July 1943 the French submarine Casabianca delivered arms for the Resistance here.

06
Mortella Tower
Two British warships attacked this small Genoese tower in 1794 and were repelled for two days by a garrison of just 33 men before it finally fell. The Royal Navy was so impressed that it copied the design across its own empire, giving rise to the network of 'Martello towers' still standing on British coastlines today.

07
Square of the Gates
This shaded square at the entrance to Saint-Florent's old town has served as the social hinge of the village since the Genoese laid it out around 1440. Some historical guides still record its older name, Place des Ormeaux, though locals have long since moved on to evening pétanque and artisan markets under the same trees.
