Audio Guide Île-Rousse

app, one-time €4.99

Île-Rousse was founded in 1758 by Pascal Paoli specifically to break Genoese control of the Corsican coast, laid out on a strict grid that still defines the old town today. Red porphyry rock gives the island its name and its look, from the ancient Genoese watchtower to the lighthouse built two centuries later. The town is compact enough to walk in an afternoon, yet its layers run from prehistoric settlement to Enlightenment urban planning.

Old Town (Paoli's Grid Plan of 1758)

Pascal Paoli founded this town in 1758 not as a settlement but as a strategic weapon: a purpose-built free port designed to strangle Genoese maritime trade in the Balagne. The grid of perpendicular streets, drawn up with Don Gregorio Salvini, is still intact and walkable today.

  • 02

    Paoli Square

The square that bears Paoli's name was only laid out in 1834, decades after his death, on land that had been outside the original town walls. Shaded by plane trees and date palms, it hosts a regular market and the annual international pétanque tournament named in his honour.

  • 03

Covered Market (Hall with 21 Columns)

Built between 1844 and 1846 on the site of the old town gate, this neoclassical hall stands on 21 pink granite Doric columns and is now a listed Monument Historique. The columns glow under an evening light installation added after a 2011 restoration.

  • 04

    Pietra Tower

The Genoese built this red-porphyry watchtower in 1530 to watch for Barbary pirates, more than two centuries before the town of Île-Rousse itself existed. It stands 32 metres above sea level on what was once a separate island, now connected to the mainland by a 19th-century causeway.

  • 05

    Pietra Lighthouse

Constructed between 1855 and 1857 as part of a wider Corsican lighthouse programme under the Second Empire, this 12.65-metre white tower sits on the site of a ruined Genoese redoubt and emits three flashes every twelve seconds to mark the port entrance.

  • 06

    Balagne Tramway (U Trinichellu)

The metre-gauge railway nicknamed 'u Trinichellu' has been threading between Île-Rousse and Calvi since its completion in November 1890, and in summer 1965 it introduced optional beach stops along the way, earning it the nickname 'train des plages'. It remains the most scenic way to leave town.

  • 07

    Saleccia Park

A wildfire in 1974 gutted this estate, which had been in the hands of a family connected by marriage to Pascal Paoli himself. After decades of restoration, the 7-hectare park reopened in 2005 with more than 100 olive varieties and received the French 'Jardin Remarquable' classification in 2015.
