Audio Guide Corte
app, one-time €4.99
Corte sits at the geographic and spiritual heart of Corsica, the only inland town of any size on the island. It was the capital of Pascal Paoli's independent Corsican Republic from 1755 to 1769, and that chapter still shapes everything here: the citadel perched on its rock above two river gorges, the university Paoli founded, the cafés around his statue. Beyond the old town, two glacially carved gorges push straight into the mountains.

01
Citadel of Corte
Called the 'Eagle's Nest,' this fortress perched 481 metres above the confluence of the Restonica and Tavignanu rivers was built in 1419 and later expanded with Vauban-style bastions after the French took control in 1769. It now holds the Museum of Corsica and commands views over the whole mountain interior.
-
02
Paoli Square
Napoléon III named this square by imperial decree on 2 June 1853, and a bronze statue of Pascal Paoli, funded by public subscription, was erected the following year. The square stands on the site of the university Paoli himself founded in 1765, making it layered with the whole arc of Corsican self-determination.

03
Restonica Gorges
An 18-kilometre glacial corridor of steep granite walls, the Restonica Gorges are part of the Natura 2000 network and shelter species found nowhere else, including the endemic Corsican Nuthatch. The river that carved them originates from Lac de Melo at 1,710 metres and flows into Corte itself.

04
National Palace
Built by Genoa in the late 16th century as the lieutenant governor's residence, this stone palace became the seat of Paoli's Corsican Republic from 1755 to 1769, housing its parliament, printing press, and mint. The site's earlier structures were deliberately demolished after the death of resistance leader Sampiero Corso as a show of Genoese power.
-
05
Church of the Annunciation
Construction began in 1450, but the church's distinctive bright pink façade and barrel-vaulted interior took their current form after a Baroque remodelling in 1655. Its 18th-century pipe organ is a listed Monument Historique, and the church holds relics of Saint Théophile de Corte.
-
06
Gaffory House
The façade of this 18th-century stone house still carries the bullet and cannonball impacts from the Genoese siege of Corte around 1745 to 1750, left unrepaired as a deliberate record of the resistance led by the house's owner, Jean-Pierre Gaffory. Listed as a Monument Historique since 1995, it stands directly opposite the Church of the Annunciation.
-
07
Statue of the Duke of Padua
This bronze figure of Corte-born general Jean-Thomas Arrighi de Casanova was made by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor later responsible for the Statue of Liberty, and inaugurated in 1868. The pedestal lists the Napoleonic battles where Arrighi distinguished himself, from Marengo to Leipzig.
