Audio Guide Épernay

app, one-time €4.99

Épernay is the undisputed capital of Champagne, a town where over 200 million bottles rest in chalk cellars running beneath a single boulevard. The Avenue de Champagne alone holds more prestige houses per metre than almost anywhere on earth, and the vineyards climbing the surrounding hills are a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

    Champagne Avenue

Beneath this one-kilometre boulevard lie the chalk cellars of the great Champagne houses, storing over 200 million bottles at any given moment. Originally called the 'chemin de l'Hôpital' in the Middle Ages, it only received its current name in 1925.

  • 02

    Moët & Chandon

The entire Moët & Chandon complex was reduced to rubble by bombing on the nights of 19 and 20 July 1918, then rebuilt between 1928 and 1932 as a rational Art Deco industrial complex resting on 239 reinforced-concrete columns. Twenty-eight kilometres of cellars run underneath.

  • 03

    Saint Peter's Abbey of Hautvillers

Known as the birthplace of Champagne, this Benedictine abbey was founded around 650 after, according to tradition, a dove guided its founder Saint Nivard to the exact beech tree marking the spot. Dom Pierre Pérignon later served here as cellarer, refining the blending and bottling methods that defined the region's wine.

  • 04

    Mercier Champagne

Eugène Mercier was just 20 years old when he founded this house in 1858 with the goal of making Champagne accessible to everyone. He had 18 kilometres of chalk cellars excavated between 1871 and 1877, then connected them directly to the Paris-Strasbourg railway line to ship bottles straight from the ground.

  • 05

    Castellane Champagne

The 66-metre reinforced-concrete tower that rises above this Art Nouveau house was completed around 1904 and was one of the early large-scale uses of that material in the region. The house itself was originally founded in 1883 under a different name, then rebranded in 1895 by Viscount Florens de Castellane, a descendant of the ancient counts of Arles and Provence.

  • 06

    Statue of Dom Pérignon

Sculpted in 1910 by Léon-Joseph Chavalliaud, this bronze figure survived the destruction of World War I while much of Épernay did not, and still stands at the entrance to Moët & Chandon. The man it depicts, Dom Pérignon, left no surviving written treatise on sparkling wine, making much of his legend exactly that.

  • 07

    Mount Bernon

This 207-metre chalk hill overlooking Épernay is a type locality for the Sparnacien geological age, meaning scientists named an entire stratigraphic period after it. Classified as a natural monument in 1934, its slopes hold vineyards planted by the Moët family alongside woodland sheltering notable biodiversity.
