Audio Guide Chantilly

app, one-time €4.99

Chantilly is best known for two things that seem worlds apart: one of France's most spectacular castle complexes and the horse-racing culture that has shaped the town for nearly two centuries. The Château de Chantilly alone holds a garden by Le Nôtre, a trove of paintings second only to the Louvre, and stables so grand their builder reportedly believed he would be reincarnated as a horse.

    Chantilly Castle

The Grand Condé reportedly threw the castle keys into the moat after a banquet went wrong, and the kitchen's legendary sauce was born from that same frantic evening. Built on an 11th-century fortress, the estate now spans 7,800 hectares and houses the Musée Condé, whose art collection ranks second in France only to the Louvre.

  • 02

    Great Stables

Louis-Henri de Bourbon commissioned these stables because he genuinely believed he would be reincarnated as a horse and wanted suitable lodgings ready. Stretching 180 metres and built between 1719 and 1740, they once housed 240 horses and 500 dogs under a central dome rising 28 metres.

  • 03

    Condé Museum

Henri d'Orléans donated his entire Chantilly estate to the Institut de France on condition that not a single artwork could ever be loaned out or moved, which is why masterpieces by Raphael and Delacroix can only be seen here. The collection includes the celebrated manuscript Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry.

  • 04

French Formal Garden of Le Nôtre

André Le Nôtre considered Chantilly one of his finest achievements, using the natural slope and abundant water to engineer a 2.5-kilometre Grand Canal and elaborate fountains across 115 hectares. He completed it for the Grand Condé in the 17th century, before doing the same at Versailles.

  • 05

    Chantilly Racecourse

Before the first formal race in 1834, the whole area was a hunting meadow delineated by Anne de Montmorency back in 1537. Today the 65-hectare racecourse hosts the Prix du Jockey Club, one of France's most prestigious flat races.

  • 06

    Hamlet of Chantilly

Prince Louis-Joseph de Bourbon-Condé built these rustic cottages between 1774 and 1775 as a theatrical joke: humble thatched exteriors concealing lavishly decorated interiors meant to surprise guests. The idea caught on fast enough that Marie-Antoinette copied it for her own Hameau at Versailles.

  • 07

    Castle of the White Queen

Tucked beside the Commelles ponds deep in Chantilly Forest, this neo-Gothic hunting pavilion was rebuilt in 1825 on the site of a 1293 manor, complete with crenellated towers and stone knight statues that have nothing to do with any White Queen. The ponds themselves were dug in the 13th century by monks from Chaalis Abbey for fish farming.
