Audio Guide Vaux-le-Vicomte
app, one-time €4.99
Vaux-le-Vicomte is the 17th-century château that dazzled Louis XIV so completely he had its builder arrested and then copied everything for Versailles. Set in Maincy, 50 km southeast of Paris, the estate brings together Louis Le Vau's architecture, Charles Le Brun's interiors, and André Le Nôtre's 33-hectare formal gardens in a single visit.

Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte
Nicolas Fouquet threw a fête here on 17 August 1661 to honour Louis XIV, and within weeks the king had him arrested for suspected embezzlement. Built between 1656 and 1661, the château's 100-room grandeur directly inspired the creation of Versailles.
-
02
French Gardens of Le Nôtre
André Le Nôtre designed these 33 hectares of parterres, terraces, and water features before he ever worked at Versailles, making Vaux-le-Vicomte the proving ground for the entire French formal garden tradition. The gardens were painstakingly restored after 1875 by Alfred Sommier.

03
Museum of Carriages
The former stables designed by Louis Le Vau now house horse-drawn carriages spanning the 17th to 19th centuries, offering a close look at the elite travel culture of the Ancien Régime. Highlights include a pony carriage among the thematic displays.

04
House of the Carmelites
Fouquet bought this former Carmelite convent in 1658 and turned it into a royal tapestry manufactory under Charles Le Brun's artistic direction. It operated for barely three years before Fouquet's arrest, after which Louis XIV transferred the whole operation to the Gobelins in Paris.

05
Maincy Bridge
Paul Cézanne painted this small 1829 wooden footbridge over the Almont River, and the resulting canvas now hangs in the Musée d'Orsay. The bridge sits within the protected Vallée du Ru de l'Ancoeur and remains closed to the public, which makes spotting it feel like a find.

06
Saint Stephen's Church of Maincy
This village church traces its origins to an 11th-century sanctuary, yet its current appearance owes much to Louis Le Vau, who remodelled it under Fouquet's patronage in the 17th century. The medieval defensive tower was simply raised a storey and repurposed as the bell tower.
