Stade is a compact Hanseatic town on the Elbe whose medieval harbor quarter has changed little since 1300. A Swedish military occupation lasting 67 years left behind two monumental warehouses and an armory whose stone still bears the monogram of King Karl XII, making this one of the most legible pieces of Swedish imperial history in Germany.

    Old Hanseatic Harbor

Vikings used this harbor as early as 994, and the wooden quay walls laid around 1300 still sit beneath the cobblestones today. The whole ensemble, including the crane, the Swedish storehouse, and the Fish Market, has kept essentially the same footprint for over 700 years.

  • 02

    Swedish Storehouse Museum

Built between 1692 and 1705 with bricks salvaged from earlier buildings, this massive warehouse still carries the monogram of King Karl XII on its sandstone details. It is the most direct reminder that Stade spent 67 years as a Swedish administrative capital before passing to Danish, Hanoverian, and finally Prussian hands.

  • 03

    St. Cosmas and Damian

The Baroque organ installed here by Arp Schnitger is the reason serious organ scholars still make the journey to Stade. The church itself was rebuilt after the catastrophic fire of 1659 and its octagonal tower rises 62.45 metres above the old town.

  • 04

    Historic Town Hall

After the 1659 fire levelled two-thirds of Stade, Swedish troops oversaw the rebuilding of the town hall in Dutch Renaissance style between 1667 and 1668. Its ornate sandstone portal with allegorical figures is the most decorated facade on the market square.

  • 05

    Hökerhus

Dendrochronology shows the timbers of this merchant's house were felled between 1648 and 1651, placing it among the very few Stade buildings that survived the great fire of 1659 intact. The carved volute cartouche above the entrance, dated 1650, is one of the oldest datable facade details in the old town.

  • 06

    Wood Crane

Stade's first documented treadwheel crane appears in city records as far back as 1337, and the one standing at the Old Hanse Harbor today was rebuilt in 1977 on the initiative of the local Rotary Club, modelled after the crane in Lüneburg. For nearly 240 years the original 1661 version controlled which cargo moved in and out of the harbor.

  • 07

    Armory

When archaeologists excavated beneath the Zeughaus in 1961 and 1993, they found the crypt of Bremen Archbishop Gottfried von Arnsberg, who died in 1363, hidden under a building that later had King Karl XII's monogram carved into its facade. The armory was built directly on top of a demolished 12th-century Premonstratensian convent.
