Audio Guide Plön
app, one-time €4.99
Plön sits at the edge of the Großer Plöner See, the largest inland lake in Schleswig-Holstein, with a Renaissance castle crowning the hill above the water. The town spent two centuries as the seat of a minor duchy, and the buildings left behind range from Baroque garden pavilions to a Jugendstil swimming hall once reserved for Kaiser Wilhelm II's sons.

Plön Castle
Built between 1633 and 1636 for Duke Joachim Ernst, this Renaissance castle survived both World Wars completely intact and now houses a training academy for opticians. Its Knights' Hall measures roughly 12 by 26 metres and the hilltop position gives an unbroken view over the Großer Plöner See.

02
Lake Plön
Carved out by glacier tongues during the last ice age, this 29-square-kilometre lake reaches 58 metres at its deepest point and sits within the Natura 2000 network. The drop in water level at the end of the 19th century was what created the Prinzeninsel as a peninsula.

03
St. Nicholas Church
A lightning strike on 24 June 1864 destroyed almost the entire Baroque interior, and the replacement was rebuilt in Neo-Romanesque style in just two years. The western tower rises 60 metres and houses four bells that still mark time over the market square.

04
Holstein Switzerland Nature Park
The region got its evocative name in 1885 when Johannes Janus opened a hotel called 'Holsteinische Schweiz', and the label eventually stuck to the whole landscape. Spanning around 750 square kilometres, the park contains more than 200 lakes shaped by the same glacial processes that formed Lake Plön.

05
Plön Castle Garden
Duke Friedrich Carl laid out this Baroque garden between 1730 and 1748, and it was later reshaped into an English landscape garden with linden alleys that still stand today. The Rococo Prinzenhaus sits at its centre, built as a private pavilion rather than a formal court residence.

06
Old Swimming Hall
Completed in 1909 in Jugendstil style, this 240-square-metre hall with barrel vaults and arched windows was built specifically for the Prussian Cadet Institute and the sons of Kaiser Wilhelm II. After closing in 1994 it was restored and reopened as a cultural forum hosting concerts and exhibitions.

07
Parnass Tower
The Plöner Verschönerungsverein (Plön Beautification Society) raised this 20-metre brick-and-steel observation tower in 1888 on top of a terminal moraine, combining a war memorial for the Franco-Prussian and First Schleswig Wars with a panoramic viewpoint. The geological quirk of its moraine base means the platform sits higher than its modest height suggests.
