Audio Guide Saxon Switzerland

app, one-time €4.99

Saxon Switzerland is a landscape of towering sandstone cliffs, deep river gorges, and hilltop fortresses rising above the Elbe. One concrete measure of how seriously it takes its geology: the Bastei rock formation took 90 million years to reach its current shape, and the bridge connecting its peaks has been drawing visitors since 1851. Whether you're here for the hiking, the history, or the sheer strangeness of the scenery, there's more layered into these rocks than most visitors expect.

    Bastei

A sandstone rock formation 305 meters above the Elbe, shaped over 90 million years and now crossed by a stone bridge built in 1851 that spans 76.5 meters between the peaks. It once formed part of the defensive belt around Neurathen Castle, and today pulls in around 1.5 million visitors a year.

  • 02

    Königstein Fortress

Perched 240 to 247 meters above the Elbe on a sandstone plateau, this fortress has never been taken in battle since its first written mention in 1233. It covers 9.5 hectares with over 50 buildings and has served, at different points, as a state prison, a treasure vault, and a military stronghold.

  • 03

    Painter's Way

The 116-kilometer trail follows routes used by landscape painters including Caspar David Friedrich in the 18th and 19th centuries, revived as a modern hiking path in 2006. It was named Germany's most beautiful hiking trail in 2007 and passes through the core of the Saxon Switzerland National Park.

  • 04

    Schrammsteine

Around 80 sandstone peaks form this jagged ridge east of Bad Schandau, with the highest point, Hohe Torstein, reaching 425 meters. The medieval Falkenstein served as a watchtower within the formation, and the whole group sits inside the national park's protected zone.

  • 05

    Pfaffenstein

This sandstone table mountain reaches 434.6 meters and has been inhabited since the Stone Age, with Stone Age tools and Bronze Age ceramic shards found at its edges. Its standout feature is the Barbarine, a freestanding 43-meter rock needle that was first climbed in 1905 and has been off-limits to climbers since 1975 to protect its stability.

  • 06

    Sweden Holes

Local residents from Rathewalde hid in this narrow sandstone gorge in August 1639 to escape Swedish soldiers, which is exactly how the name stuck. The path through it covers about one kilometer with 700 stairs and 20 bridges, climbing 160 meters through a gorge formed by erosion along the main fissure lines of the Elbe sandstone.

  • 07

    Lichtenhain Waterfall

The waterfall was modified in 1830 specifically to attract tourists: a retractable weir was installed so a "Waterfall Puller" could release a dramatic surge of water on schedule in exchange for a fee. The main drop is 7 meters, and the spectacle still runs on a timed cycle today.
