Audio Guide Freiberg

app, one-time €4.99

Freiberg built its fortune on silver, and nearly every street corner tells that story. The Cathedral of St. Mary alone holds a 44-register Baroque organ and a 800-year-old golden gate, while the city's medieval market squares, Renaissance castle, and the world's oldest mining university fill in the rest of the picture.

    Cathedral of St. Mary

After the great city fire of 1484 reduced the original Romanesque church to rubble, Freiberg rebuilt it as a late Gothic hall church that became the burial site of the Saxon electors. Inside, the 1225 Romanesque Golden Gate and Gottfried Silbermann's 44-register organ from 1714 share the same nave.

  • 02

    Freudenstein Castle

Otto the Rich built the first fortress here around 1168 specifically to guard the silver mines below, and Elector Augustus then converted it into a Renaissance palace four centuries later. Today it holds one of the world's largest mineral exhibitions, with over 3,500 specimens inside a courtyard measuring roughly 56 by 37 metres.

  • 03

    Great Silbermann Organ

This was Gottfried Silbermann's first large-scale organ and, by his own hand, his largest ever: 2,674 pipes, 44 registers, a blend of German and French voicing, and a pitch originally set at a′ = 476.3 Hz that had to be retuned later. Johann Kuhnau praised it at the 1714 inauguration.

  • 04

    Upper Market

Laid out between 1210 and 1217 on silver-mining wealth, the Obermarkt has kept its name for nearly 800 years without ever being renamed. The 1897 fountain statue of Otto the Rich and the town hall's Meissen porcelain carillon anchor a square that also witnessed the execution of those involved in the 1455 Prinzenraub affair.

  • 05

    TU Bergakademie Freiberg

Founded in 1765 to rebuild Saxony's economy after the Seven Years' War, this is the oldest mining sciences university in the world. Among the discoveries made here: the elements germanium and indium.

  • 06

    Theater Freiberg

A private residence built in 1623 was converted into a theatre in 1789, and when the city took ownership in 1791 it became what is still the oldest municipal theatre in continuous operation in its original building anywhere in the world. Carl Maria von Weber's opera Das Waldmädchen had its world premiere on this stage in 1800.

  • 07

    Donat Tower

Of the entire ring of towers that once defended Freiberg's medieval walls, this 35-metre round tower from the mid-15th century is the only one left standing. Its circular design was a deliberate response to the arrival of artillery, and it takes its name from a wooden church dedicated to Saint Donatus that stood nearby until 1443.
