Audio Guide Bad Muskau
app, one-time €4.99
Bad Muskau is defined by one of Europe's most ambitious landscape gardens: an 830-hectare UNESCO World Heritage park that spills across the German-Polish border. Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau spent three decades reshaping the Lusatian Neisse valley into something that reads more like a painting than a park. The town around it is small, quiet, and thoroughly overshadowed by its extraordinary green neighbour.

Muskauer Park (Prince Pückler Park)
Pückler ran out of money and sold the entire estate in 1845, yet the 830-hectare park he created across two future nations survived to become a UNESCO World Heritage site. Designed from 1815 onward with advice from Karl Friedrich Schinkel, it folds the natural topography of the Lusatian Neisse into a composition that deliberately blurs the line between garden and countryside.

02
New Palace
The site has been fortified since 1245, but a catastrophic fire in 1945 gutted the Neo-Renaissance palace that Pückler had spent decades perfecting, leaving its shell to stand empty for generations. Fully restored, it now houses a museum and an observation tower rising 35 metres above the park.
-
03
Old Castle
First recorded in 1245 as the gatehouse of a moated castle, the building was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War in 1643 and rebuilt as a Baroque three-wing complex in just seven years. Today it holds the park archive and still hosts civil wedding ceremonies in its sandstone-portalled halls.
-
04
Double Bridge
Originally two simple wooden footbridges thrown across the Neisse in 1822, they were upgraded to stone and brick in 1867 and then carefully rebuilt from historical plans between 2000 and 2003. The reopening on 1 May 2004 coincided with Poland's EU accession, turning a garden bridge into an accidental symbol of European reunion.

05
Orangery
Ludwig Persius designed this 1844 building to shelter exotic plants through Saxon winters, but he built it on the cellars of a demolished brewery and reused its rubble in the walls. The mix of Neo-Gothic Tudor arches and Moorish detailing is an unusually eclectic combination for a greenhouse.
-
06
English Bridge
When it was built in 1822 it was called the Lattice Bridge for its diagonal wrought-iron railing, and it was the only footpath connecting what are now two different countries within the park. Its 60.78-metre span has been reconstructed several times after floods and wartime damage, most recently in 2011.
-
07
Market Square Bad Muskau
The square was first mentioned in 1253 and has held weekly markets, wool markets, and three annual fairs since a market ordinance of 1664 codified them into law. The 1850 fountain still stands at its centre, and a million-euro restoration in 2009 brought back some of the civic life the square had quietly lost over decades.
