Audio Guide Kappeln

app, one-time €4.99

Kappeln sits on the Schlei fjord in northern Schleswig-Holstein, where herring fishing shaped everything from the town's name to its skyline. The last surviving herring fence in Europe still stands in the water here, and the red-brick smokehouse chimneys have been puffing since 1911. It is a small harbour town with an unusually layered past.

    Herring Fence

The last wooden fish fence of its kind in all of Europe, first documented in 1451, this W-shaped barrier of roughly 2,000 wooden posts once guided migrating herring into traps and was nearly demolished when Kappeln gained city rights in 1870. It remains the centrepiece of the annual Kappelner Heringstage festival.

  • 02

    St. Nicholas Church

The church that gave Kappeln its name: seafarers erected a chapel here before 1155 as thanks for safe passage through the Schlei, and the current Late Baroque building, designed by Johann Adam Richter between 1789 and 1793, stacks organ, pulpit, and altar in a single vertical axis inside.

  • 03

    Amanda Mill

Built in 1888 to replace a city mill that had burned down, this 32-metre Dutch-style windmill cost 80,000 Goldmark (roughly 600,000 euros today) and milled grain until 1964, when its wings were removed. The City of Kappeln bought and restored it in 1976, and it now houses a sawmill museum.

  • 04

    Kappeln Drawbridge

A ferry crossing here was documented as far back as 1671, replaced by a pontoon bridge in 1867 whose wagons had to be pulled by horses because locomotives were too heavy. The current double-leaf bascule bridge, opened in 2002 and nicknamed 'die Kappelner Autobahn,' replaced a swing bridge that had served since 1927.

  • 05

    Angeln Steam Railway

Opened in 1904 as a regional transport link between Süderbrarup and Kappeln, this 13-kilometre narrow-gauge line was kept alive by volunteers after regular passenger services ended in 1972. Museum rides began in 1979, and freight ran all the way to 2003 for a local dairy.

  • 06

    Eel and Fish Smokehouse Föh

The Föh family traces its roots to Huguenot brothers who fled France around 1629, and the smokehouse they founded in Kappeln in 1911 still uses 14 traditional Altonaer Öfen fired with beech and alder wood. The three red-brick chimneys, built in the 1920s and early 1930s, are among the most recognisable shapes on the harbour front.

  • 07

    Arnis

Germany's smallest city by area covers just 0.45 square kilometres and was founded in 1667 by 64 families from Kappeln who refused to accept serfdom under their feudal lord. A ducal land surveyor divided the peninsula into exactly 100 plots along a central axis, a layout that still defines the town today.
