Audio Guide Pont-Aven

app, one-time €4.99

Pont-Aven is a small Breton town that punches well above its size in art history. In the late 19th century, Paul Gauguin and a circle of painters developed a bold new visual language here, one that fed directly into Symbolism and beyond. Fourteen medieval mills once lined two kilometres of the Aven River, and the landscapes that turned those wheels still look much as they did when artists first set up their easels.

    The Wood of Love

On 6 October 1888, Gauguin gave a painting lesson to Paul Sérusier in this riverside woodland, and the canvas Sérusier carried away, known as Le Talisman, became the founding document of the Nabis movement. Ancient beeches and granitic outcrops line 3.4 km of paths that look almost unchanged since that afternoon.

  • 02

Chapel of Our Lady of Tremalo

The polychrome wooden crucifix hanging inside this 1550 Flamboyant Gothic chapel inspired Gauguin's famous painting The Yellow Christ, making a quiet rural chapel one of the unlikely pivot points of modern art. The date 1550 is still carved above the south door, and the du Plessis family coat of arms remains visible on the stonework.

  • 03

    The Calvary of Nizon

This granite calvary, carved around the 15th century and classified as a Monument Historique since 1942, moved Gauguin enough that he transposed its Pietà scene into The Green Christ. Its three decorated shafts stand in front of the Église Saint-Amet, part of a devotional ensemble that has barely changed in five centuries.

  • 04

    The Mills of Pont-Aven

By the late Middle Ages, fourteen mills were packed into roughly two kilometres of the Aven River, grinding grain and producing paper for local lordships. The last traditional water mill fell silent around 1925, but the channels, weirs, and millhouses that remain shaped the exact scenery that drew artists to town in the first place.

  • 05

    The Gloanec Inn

Marie-Jeanne Gloanec ran this modest two-storey inn from 1860 at prices low enough that Gauguin, Émile Bernard, and Paul Sérusier could afford to stay for months at a stretch, turning her dining room into an informal studio and debating hall for the Pont-Aven School. The building now houses an art bookshop and gallery.

  • 06

The Galettes of Pont-Aven (Traou Mad Biscuit Factory)

Alexis Le Villain invented the palet and named his bakery Traou Mad, Breton for "good things," in 1920, building on the town's centuries-old milling tradition. The packaging has carried reproductions of Gauguin's paintings for decades, and the factory holds the official "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant" label.

  • 07

    Rustephan Castle

The Breton name Rustéphan literally means "Château d'Étienne," after a 12th-century Count of Penthièvre, but the striking granite walls standing up to 20 metres high date to a rebuild around 1480 by Jean II du Fou, cup-bearer to King Louis XI. The ruins inspired local legends and artists for generations, and in 2024 partial collapse risks forced new safety measures.
