Audio Guide Crozon

app, one-time €4.99

Crozon occupies a dramatic peninsula in Finistère, where 550-million-year-old cliffs drop into the Atlantic and a UNESCO Global Geopark sits inside a converted schoolhouse. From a natural sandstone arch that locals call a castle to sea caves coloured by copper deposits, the geology here tells a story most visitors never expect to find in Brittany.

    Cape of the Goat

The cliffs here are built from rocks laid down 550 million years ago, long before the first fish appeared on Earth. At 90 to 100 metres above the Atlantic, Cap de la Chèvre is the southern anchor of the Crozon Peninsula and one of Brittany's most geologically layered headlands.

  • 02

    Dinan Point (Dinan Castle)

What looks like a ruined castle from a distance is actually a 12-metre natural sandstone arch shaped entirely by the sea. Pointe de Dinan's 'Château de Dinan' is one of the most photogenic accidents of marine erosion on the Armorican coast.

  • 03

    Morgat Sea Caves

The vivid reds and greens inside these caves come not from paint but from copper deposits and algae embedded in 460-million-year-old sandstone. Carved by pressure, suction and rainwater over geological timescales, the caves served as refuge during the French Revolution before tourists ever set foot in them.

  • 04

    Saint-Guénolé Abbey of Landévennec

Founded in the late 5th century by Saint Guénolé, this abbey was destroyed by Vikings in 913 and rebuilt in Romanesque stone, with a church that stretched 52 metres long. Its scriptorium produced illuminated manuscripts that made it one of Brittany's most important early medieval centres.

  • 05

    Saint Peter's Church of Crozon

The altarpiece inside this rebuilt parish church is a 1624 polychromed oak triptych packed with 400 individual figures, carved to commemorate ten thousand Christian martyrs on Mount Ararat. It was listed as a Monument Historique in 1906 and survived the Liberation of Crozon in 1944.

  • 06

    House of Minerals

A boys' school built between 1908 and 1910 is now home to one of Europe's largest collections of fluorescent minerals, glowing in ultraviolet light inside a building of moellon masonry and slate. Since 1987 it has been part of the UNESCO Global Geopark network.

  • 07

    Morgat

A Roman coin hoard found in 1976 inside a salting tank confirmed that Morgat's maritime life predates the sardine boats recorded here in the 18th century by well over a thousand years. Armand Peugeot, better known for automobiles, was among the entrepreneurs who turned this fishing port into a seaside resort in the 1880s.
