Audio Guide Ornans

app, one-time €4.99

Ornans sits in a limestone gorge in the Franche-Comté, its centuries-old houses rising on stilts directly above the Loue River. The town is inseparable from Gustave Courbet, the realist painter born here in 1819, whose canvases turned its river reflections and local faces into a manifesto against academic painting.

    Gustave Courbet Museum

Archaeological digs during its renovation uncovered masonry from the 13th and 14th centuries beneath the floors, layers that visitors walk over without knowing it. The museum, housed in the Hôtel Hébert where Courbet's family lived, holds the largest public collection of his works across more than 2,000 square metres of exhibition space.

    The Houses on the Loue

Ornans earned the nickname 'Little Venice of the Franche-Comté' for a group of 16th- and 17th-century houses built on stone and wooden pilotis directly over the Loue, a heritage designation that dates to December 1935. They are the image most people carry away from the town.

  • 03

    The Mirror of the Loue

A small dam on the Loue, the Rivex barrage, creates an unnaturally calm stretch of water that mirrors the facades, trees, and cliffs of Ornans with near-perfect symmetry. Courbet painted this exact view around 1872, and his studio built in 1860 was positioned on the riverbank specifically to capture it.

  • 04

    Saint-Laurent Church of Ornans

Only the base of the original 12th-century tower survives, its paired round-arched windows still visible, while the rest of the church was rebuilt between 1546 and 1548 after successive fires, funded by Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle under the reign of Charles V. The nave's four bays and choir were completed in just two years by a local master mason.

  • 05

    Castle Belvedere of Ornans

The castle was founded in 1237 by Hugues de Chalon, and tradition holds that his son Othon IV, later Count of Burgundy, was born within its walls. Today only the rampart remnants and the Saint-Georges Chapel survive on the rocky spur 150 metres above the valley, but the view across the Loue is the best in town.

  • 06

    Tomb of Gustave Courbet

The gravestone in Ornans carries an inscription error: it lists Courbet's birth month as August when he was actually born in June, a slip no one corrected after his remains were repatriated from Switzerland in 1919. Every 31 December, a gathering marks the anniversary of his death in exile.

  • 07

    The Chavots Fisherman

Courbet's first ever sculpture, made in 1862 as part of an artistic challenge with another sculptor, depicts a 12-year-old local boy fishing the small river fish called chavots. Its nudity caused enough controversy that the bronze was removed from public display in 1871 and only reinstalled in 1882.
