Annecy

Annecy sits at the northern tip of one of Europe's clearest lakes, ringed by Alpine peaks and threaded by medieval canals that earned it the nickname 'Venice of the Alps.' The 12th-century Palais de l'Île, built on a rocky island mid-river, has been a mint, a prison, and a courthouse, and still stands today as the city's most recognisable silhouette.

  • Medieval old town
  • Alpine lake
  • Castle and fortress
  • Gothic churches
  • Mountain trails
  • Arcaded streets
  • Old Town of Annecy

Cobblestone lanes, pastel façades with Savoyard shutters, and a network of canals fed by the Thiou River make this medieval quarter one of the most intact in the Alps. It grew around the Annecy-le-Neuf castle in the 12th century and still hosts the Fête du Lac and other major cultural events.

  • Palace of the Island

Built in 1132 on a natural rocky island in the Thiou River, this triangular structure has served as a mint, a prison, and a courthouse in its nearly 900-year life. Its ship-like silhouette, complete with a 15th-century spiral staircase and thick stone walls, is the defining image of Annecy.

  • Lake Annecy

Formed roughly 15,000 to 18,000 years ago by retreating Alpine glaciers, Lake Annecy is often called the cleanest lake in Europe, a status protected by strict conservation measures introduced in the 1960s. Prehistoric lake dwellings from the Neolithic and Bronze Age have been found along its shores.

  • Annecy Castle

Used as military barracks until 1947, this castle built between the 12th and 16th centuries was the residence of the Counts of Geneva and later the Dukes of Genevois-Nemours. It became a museum in 1953 and features a well sunk 40 metres into the rock below it.

  • Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard

Perched 200 metres above the lake, this castle has been in the same family since around 923 and is said to have inspired Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. Its library alone holds around 12,000 volumes.

  • Gorges of Fier

The Fier River carved these limestone walls, reaching up to 70 metres high, over 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. A 252-metre footbridge has threaded visitors through the canyon since 1869, and the site was classified as a natural monument in 1943.

  • Church of Saint Francis

Founded in 1642 to house the tombs of Francis de Sales and Jane de Chantal, this Baroque church modelled on Rome's Church of the Gesù was turned into a factory during the French Revolution before being restored to religious use in 1888. It is still known locally as the 'Église des Italiens' for its longstanding ties to Annecy's Italian community.
