Audio Guide Camaret-sur-Mer
app, one-time €4.99
Camaret-sur-Mer sits at the edge of Brittany's Crozon Peninsula, where prehistoric stone rows, a UNESCO-listed fortress tower, and cliffs dropping 70 meters into the Atlantic all share the same stretch of coastline. The town's name comes from the Breton for 'curved current', a nod to the 900-meter pebble spit that has shaped its harbour since long before the sardine fleets arrived.

01
Vauban Tower
Its distinctive golden hue comes not from the local granite but from a unique cement rendering applied to the stone, earning it the nickname 'Tour Dorée'. Built between 1693 and 1696 under Vauban's design, it proved its worth almost immediately by helping repel an Anglo-Dutch fleet in 1694 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
-
02
Pen-Hir Point
The cliffs here rise up to 70 meters above the sea, exposing Armorican sandstone laid down roughly 460 million years ago, with isolated sea stacks called the Tas de Pois standing offshore. At the top, a 15-meter Lorraine cross marks the spot where Charles de Gaulle himself came in 1951 to inaugurate the memorial to Breton fighters of Free France.

03
Chapel of Our Lady of Rocamadour
The bell tower has been truncated since 18 June 1694, when a naval cannon shot during the Battle of Trez-Rouz knocked off the spire mid-battle. The chapel itself dates to at least 1183 and still hosts an annual pardon, its interior lined with maritime ex-votos left by generations of fishermen.

04
The Port and the Sillon
The 900-meter pebble spit called the Sillon is what gives Camaret its name, from the Breton for 'curved current', and has sheltered the harbour since Neolithic times. The port once sustained one of Brittany's busiest sardine and langoustine fleets before tourism quietly took over.

05
Cross of Pen-Hir
Proposed in 1949 by a resistance fighter, Dr. Vourc'h, and inaugurated by de Gaulle in 1951, the 15-meter granite Lorraine cross honours the Bretons who answered the call of 18 June 1940. Inscriptions in both French and Breton make the bilingual identity of the memorial explicit.
-
06
Lagatjar Alignments
Dating to around 2770 B.C. and contemporaneous with the better-known alignments at Carnac, these 65 sandstone menhirs form an inverted Pi shape stretching about 200 meters. They were restored in 1927-1928 and are thought to carry astronomical significance, though the exact purpose remains unresolved.
-
07
Point of the Spaniards
Spanish troops built a triangular fort here in 1594, during the French Wars of Religion, designed by the military architect Cristóbal de Rojas and known as 'Castilla del Leon', which is how the headland got its French name. The 60-meter cliffs were later reinforced by Vauban in the late 17th century, adding a second chapter to an already crowded military biography.
