Audio Guide Arcachon
app, one-time €4.99
Arcachon sits on the edge of a vast tidal bay in southwest France, where oyster beds, pine forests, and Europe's tallest sand dune share the same stretch of coastline. The town rose to prominence in the 1860s when financiers built an entire winter resort in the pines for the wealthy and the unwell, and that layered history still shapes every quarter today.

Dune of Pilat
At around 107 metres tall and still migrating inland each year, the Dune of Pilat has already swallowed parts of the pine forest behind it. Formed over 4,000 years ago by Atlantic winds and coastal sandbanks, it is the tallest sand dune in Europe and draws up to two million visitors a year.

02
Arcachon Basin
This 174-square-kilometre tidal lagoon took shape between 14,000 and 5,000 years ago as rising seas met the shifting sands of the Gironde coast. Today it sustains one of France's most important oyster industries alongside a rich mosaic of eelgrass beds and migratory bird habitat.

03
Winter Town
In the early 1860s, the Pereire brothers carved a 112-hectare resort out of the pine hills above the beach specifically to attract tuberculosis patients seeking clean forest air. The eclectic villas they left behind, mixing neoclassical, neo-Gothic, and Art Nouveau styles across winding lanes, are now a protected historic quarter.

04
Cap Ferret Lighthouse
The original lighthouse here was completed in 1840 to guide ships into the basin, then blown up by retreating German troops in August 1944. The 52.1-metre red-and-white replacement, inaugurated in 1949, is now a listed Historic Monument and houses a navigation exhibition.

05
Stilt Cabins
The first stilt cabin on the Île aux Oiseaux was authorised in 1883 so an oyster farmer could watch his beds at high tide; the original was destroyed by a storm in 1943, leaving only its pilings visible at low water. The two cabanes standing today, one with red shutters and one with white, were rebuilt after the war using azobé hardwood to resist the marine conditions.

06
Source of the Abatilles
In August 1923, engineer Louis Le Marié was drilling for oil in the Abatilles district when water shot up as a geyser roughly seven metres high: a mineral spring from 472 metres below, emerging at around 25 degrees with a slight sulphur odour and a flow of 70,000 litres per hour. A thermal bath opened on the site in 1926 and ran until 1969; today visitors can taste the water at a public kiosk.
-
07
Chapel of the Algerian Villa
A public-works contractor who made his fortune in Algeria built an entire neo-Moorish palace complex at l'Herbe in the 1860s and 1880s, complete with exotic gardens, oyster farms, a school, and a vineyard. The palace itself is gone, but the chapel he commissioned, featuring horseshoe arches and a bell tower crowned with both a cross and a crescent, survives as a listed Historic Monument and the sole remnant of that vanished estate.
