Audio Guide Saint-Émilion
app, one-time €4.99
Saint-Émilion is a medieval hill town in Bordeaux wine country, where vine-covered slopes, limestone alleys, and centuries of church-building have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. The whole place sits on a honeycomb of underground quarries and cellars, and the rock beneath your feet is the same stone that was carved out to make the church above it.

Monolithic Church of Saint-Émilion
Carved entirely from the limestone hillside between the 11th and 12th centuries, this is the largest monolithic church in Europe: 38 metres long, with vaults reaching 11 metres, all cut from a single mass of rock. It began as a small underground structure dug by disciples around the tomb of Saint Émilion himself after his death in 767.

02
The King's Tower
Built around 1237, this 32-metre Romanesque tower has been attributed to Henry III Plantagenet, King of England and Duke of Aquitaine, though documentation suggests it actually served as the municipal bell tower. Every year it hosts the ceremonial proclamation of the wine harvest, the Jugement du Nouveau Vin, by the Jurade.

03
Collegiate Church and Cloister
Stretching 79 metres with a 14th-century cloister 30 metres per side, this UNESCO-listed church has been reshaped continuously from its Romanesque origins in the early 12th century through to the 16th century. In 1306, Pope Clement V granted it special privileges, tying its fate closely to the papal politics of the era.

04
Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion
Viticulture here traces back to Roman grafts on native Vitis biturica vines in the 2nd century AD, and the Jurade, established in 1199 under King John Lackland, has been overseeing wine quality ever since. The jurisdiction covers 7,847 hectares and includes traces of human settlement going back roughly 35,000 years.

05
Brunet Gate
Of the seven original gates in Saint-Émilion's medieval walls, Porte Brunet is the only one still close to its original condition. In 1794, during the Revolution, it served as a secret escape route, and in 1605 it was sealed shut to stop the plague from entering.
-
06
Gate and House of the Cadène
The name comes from the Latin catena, meaning chain: this 13th-century pointed arch was literally closed with a chain to mark the boundary between the lower town of wine workers and labourers and the upper town of clergy and authorities. The half-timbered house beside it, with a facade from the early 16th century, is the last of its kind in Saint-Émilion.
-
07
Ursuline Convent
Founded in 1630 to educate girls from modest families during the Counter-Reformation, most of the convent was lost after the Revolution, but the sisters left behind something that endures: the recipe for the macarons de Saint-Émilion, still made in the town today.
