Audio Guide St. Peter-Ording
app, one-time €4.99
St. Peter-Ording is a North Sea resort on the Eiderstedt Peninsula where the beach stretches up to 2 kilometres wide and stilt houses have stood above the surf since 1911. The town sits inside a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, and a sulphur brine spring discovered beneath it in 1957 makes it the only seaside resort of its kind in Germany.

01
Westerheversand Lighthouse
Assembled from 608 cast-iron plates on an oak pile foundation between 1906 and 1907, this 40-metre tower sends its light 21 nautical miles out to sea and draws around 80,000 visitors a year. It replaced a church tower that had been the only navigational mark on this stretch of coast since 1804.
-
02
Sandy Beach St. Peter-Ording
At up to 2 kilometres wide, this is one of the broadest sandy beaches in Germany, sitting inside the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Its sand barriers have shifted position measurably over decades, making the shoreline itself a slow-moving landform.
-
03
The Stilt Houses
The first stilt house here, erected in 1911, was called the Giftbude: Low German for a place where refreshments were handed out after swimming. A storm surge destroyed it in 1935, and a replacement went up in 1938; today the structures stand 5 to 7 metres above the beach and house restaurants and lifeguard stations.
-
04
St. Peter-Ording Pier
When the pier opened in 1926, the beach lay so far out on a sandbank that it was reachable only by boat at high tide. The winter of 1926 to 1927 brought a severe ice flood that almost completely destroyed the new structure, and it was rebuilt the following year with ice-deflecting supports. At 1,095 metres, it remains one of the longer piers on the German North Sea coast.
-
05
Salt Marshes in Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park
These marshes flood up to 250 times a year and support around 10,000 species, acting as a natural buffer against storm surges. Unlike most mainland marshes in Schleswig-Holstein, those at St. Peter-Ording have a notably sandier soil composition, giving them a distinct character.
-
06
St. Magnus Church Tating
Founded in 1103, St. Magnus is considered the oldest surviving place of worship on the Eiderstedt Peninsula, and its Romanesque intermediate choir from the 12th century is the oldest standing part of any building in the region. A late-Gothic winged altar and a tower added in 1661 to 1662 mark the centuries layered into its walls.
-
07
Theodor Mommsen Memorial
The bronze bust in Garding's Stadtpark honours a local son who won the 1902 Nobel Prize in Literature for his history of Rome, making him one of very few historians ever to receive that award. The original bust by Heinrich Splieth was stolen in 2000 and replaced by a cast; Garding officially styled itself Theodor-Mommsen-Stadt two years later.
