Freiburg
A sunny university city on the southwestern edge of the Black Forest, where little water channels called Bächle run along the cobbled lanes and a Gothic minster keeps its medieval spire. Wine country starts at the city gates, and forest trails climb the hills above town.

-
Freiburg Minster
A Gothic cathedral begun around 1200. Its 116-metre filigree spire, long called the most beautiful in Christendom, and its 750-year-old Hosanna bell both came through the 1944 air raid that flattened the streets around them.
-
Freiburg Bächle
Narrow water channels run through the old town, fed by the Dreisam and built for firefighting since the 1200s. Local legend is firm on one point: step into one by accident and you'll marry a Freiburger.
-
Swabian Gate
A 13th-century city gate watched over by a fresco of Saint George, with a small tin-figure museum tucked inside its tower. It is one of the two medieval gates still standing in the old town.
-
Historic Merchants' Hall
The blood-red merchants' hall on the cathedral square, built in the 1520s, wears four Habsburg emperors across its façade, a public declaration of which side Freiburg's traders were on.
-
Schauinsland
Freiburg's house mountain, riddled with 100 kilometres of old silver-mine tunnels and topped by views toward the Alps. You reach it on Germany's longest cable car.
-
House of the Whale
A late-Gothic house with a golden oriel where Erasmus of Rotterdam took refuge in 1529. Centuries later it played a haunted dance academy in the horror film Suspiria.
-
Gerberau
A canal-side lane of old tanners' houses the locals call 'Little Venice', guarded by a 400-kilo granite crocodile and warmed by a brewpub pouring its own beer since 1877.
