Audio Guide Meersburg

app, one-time €4.99

Meersburg sits on a steep slope above Lake Constance, its medieval lanes climbing from a working ferry harbor up past half-timbered houses to Germany's oldest continuously inhabited castle. The town was shaped for centuries by the Prince-Bishops of Constance, and that layered history, from Baroque palaces to a winery founded in 1210, is still readable in its streets.

    Meersburg Castle

Never once captured in its long history, this castle above Lake Constance has been in continuous use since the 12th century, making it the oldest inhabited castle in Germany. Its Dagobert Tower, named after a Merovingian king who may or may not have built a wooden structure here around 630, has walls up to 3.3 metres thick.

  • 02

    New Palace Meersburg

The Prince-Bishops of Constance only moved into this Baroque and Rococo residence because the Reformation had made Constance itself politically untenable: their seat shifted to Meersburg in 1526, and construction on this palace began in 1710. Its ceremonial rooms, monumental staircase, and frescoed chapel remained in use until secularisation in 1802.

  • 03

    State Winery Meersburg

Viticulture here traces back to 1210, when a vineyard was transferred to the Bishop of Constance for lack of an heir, and it became Germany's first state-run winery after secularisation in 1802. The Baroque main building, designed by Franz Anton Bagnato, faces the lake and still oversees 63 hectares of vineyards.

  • 04

    Steig Street

This steep medieval lane, climbing 40 metres between the lower and upper town, was once a key link on the trade route between Konstanz and Ravensburg. The half-timbered houses lining it date from the 16th to 18th centuries, and the Bärenbrunnen fountain still stands along the route.

  • 05

    Upper Gate

Built around 1300 to control traffic on the northern trade route toward Ravensburg, this red-painted tower gate acquired its clock in 1477, a date that marked a degree of municipal autonomy. It still stands at 449 metres above sea level as a listed heritage monument.

  • 06

    Magic Column

Sculptor Peter Lenk placed a 15-metre satirical tower at Meersburg's harbor in 2007, crowded with exaggerated portraits of local figures including Franz Anton Mesmer and poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. It follows his earlier harbor sculptures at Konstanz and Überlingen, each one designed to provoke as much as to commemorate.

  • 07

    Fürstenhäusle

Poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff paid 400 Reichstaler for this small vineyard house in 1843, a sum she scraped together to have a place of her own above the lake. Built around 1600 for a Fugger canon who later became Prince-Bishop, it is now a museum dedicated to her life and work, drawing more than 10,000 visitors a year.
