Audio Guide Obernai

app, one-time €4.99

Obernai is one of Alsace's best-preserved medieval towns, ringed by 13th-century ramparts and centred on a market square that has drawn traders since 1301. Its skyline is anchored by a 59.6-metre sandstone belfry built as a chapel tower in 1285, and the surrounding vineyards climb toward Mont Sainte-Odile, a pilgrimage site founded around 680 AD.

    Belfry (Chapel Tower)

Originally a chapel bell tower raised around 1285, this 59.6-metre pink Vosges sandstone spire became the town's civic watchtower after its church nave was demolished in 1873, leaving the Gothic chancel and the tower as sole survivors. It remains the defining silhouette of Obernai and a symbol of its status within the Décapole league of ten free imperial cities.

  • 02

    Obernai Market Square

A Thursday market has been documented here since 1301, making this square one of Alsace's longest-running trading spots. Obernai joined the Décapole, the league of ten Alsatian imperial cities, in 1354, and the square served as the economic and political heart of that membership.

  • 03

    Mont Sainte-Odile

Founded around 680 by Saint Odile on a ridge 764 metres above Alsace, this abbey draws around 700,000 visitors a year and is encircled by the enigmatic Pagan Wall, 11 kilometres of cyclopean sandstone blocks whose exact purpose, whether defensive, sacred, or a refuge, remains genuinely unresolved.

  • 04

    Obernai Ramparts

Begun around 1275 and expanded into a double-ring system by 1298, these walls once stood up to 13 metres tall and stretch nearly 1,400 metres around the old town. Classified as Monuments Historiques in 1898, they remain largely intact and are among the most complete medieval fortifications in the Alsace plain.

  • 05

Church of Saints Peter and Paul

Built between 1867 and 1872 over the remains of a Romanesque crypt from around 1160, the church kept the original late-15th-century stained glass when it was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style. Its unusual north-south orientation and the 1882 Merklin organ make it architecturally distinctive among Alsatian parish churches.

  • 06

    Sainte-Odile Fountain

Sculptor Alfred-Frédéric Marzolff won a public competition against six other proposals to create this 1904 neo-Renaissance fountain, which was built not to commemorate a battle or a ruler but to celebrate the completion of the town's running water supply system, finished in 1893. The hexagonal basin and statue of the region's patron saint stand directly across from the Town Hall on the market square.

  • 07

    Well with Six Buckets

Built in 1579 by architect Henri Ottmann and sculptor Conrad Miller, this yellow sandstone Renaissance well with Corinthian columns was classified a Monument Historique back in 1900, yet almost nobody knows it was completely destroyed in an accident in 1970 and meticulously reconstructed piece by piece afterward.
