Baccarat is a small Lorraine town whose name the world knows from crystal, and the factory on the banks of the Meurthe has been producing it since 1764. Beyond the glassware, the town carries layers of medieval, wartime, and postwar history that most visitors walk right past.

Saint-Remy Church
A church rebuilt after WWII bombing contains 4,000 individual crystal panels set into a reinforced-concrete frame, flooding the interior with coloured light. The 55-metre trihedral bell tower was completed in 1957 and the building was listed as a Historic Monument in 2013.

02
Baccarat Museum
Inside the 1764 Château de la Cristallerie, more than 600 pieces trace nearly 260 years of crystal-making, including the iconic Harcourt service that has graced royal tables. The château itself began as administrative housing for the factory before its renovation into a museum in 2015.

03
Baccarat Manufacture
Founded in 1764 by the Bishop of Metz with a licence from Louis XV, the 12-hectare site was chosen specifically for Vosges driftwood, Meurthe river water, and local silica-rich sand. It has since crafted the largest crystal chandelier ever made, at 8.40 metres tall.

Tour des Voués
Built in 1305 by Henry I, Lord of Blâmont, this medieval keep is the seed from which Baccarat itself grew: when the Bishop of Metz bought it in 1332 and gained the right to expand it into a château, the surrounding settlement became the town. The quadrangular tower still rises up to 30 metres on its rocky outcrop above the Meurthe valley.
-
05
Baccarat Town Hall
The 1924 town hall was built to replace the Château Michaut, burned down by German troops in August 1914 along with about 104 neighbouring houses. Architect Henry Wilfrid Deville fitted the interior with Baccarat crystal chandeliers, making the civic building a quiet showcase for the industry that defines the town.
-
06
Leclerc Monument
A marble plaque on this riverside monument contains the ashes of an unknown Resistance deportee, placed alongside a medallion of General Leclerc whose 2nd Armored Division freed Baccarat in late October 1944 in what the historical record calls the 'Baccarat Minuet.' The monument also names local agents Marcelle Cuny and Guy Calamai, whose intelligence work made the liberation possible.
-
07
Museum of the Springs of Hercules
A farmer following a dowser's advice drilled a well in 1974 and pulled up a Roman column fragment, triggering twelve years of excavations that uncovered a 2nd-century sanctuary visited by pilgrims seeking Hercules's purifying waters. The museum in nearby Deneuvre displays 100 statues and 305 coins found on site.
