Audio Guide Eguisheim

app, one-time €4.99

Eguisheim is a small Alsatian village of concentric half-timbered streets built around a medieval castle, and it was the birthplace of Pope Leo IX in 1002. Its two Grand Cru vineyards, Eichberg and Pfersigberg, have been cultivated since at least 1325, and the village is ranked among France's most beautiful. The three ruined hilltop castles above the village, visible for miles, are a reminder of just how much medieval power was concentrated here.

    Eguisheim

Human remains found here in 1865 pushed debates about the earliest Alsatians all the way back to the Paleolithic era. Today the village's circular layout of colored half-timbered houses, laid out around a castle founded around 720, makes it one of the most recognizable streetscapes in France.

  • 02

    The Three Castles of Haut-Eguisheim

What began as a single castle built around 1006 by the father of the future Pope Leo IX gradually split into three separate feudal strongholds over the following two centuries. Their pink sandstone keeps, rising to 28 meters, stand in ruin at 591 meters above sea level, with panoramic views across the Alsatian plain.

  • 03

    Saint-Leon-IX Castle

Excavations in 1994 and 1995 found no evidence to support the long-held belief that this octagonal sandstone castle dates to the 8th century; modern research places its construction in the early 13th century. It served as the residence of an episcopal bailiff for the Bishops of Strasbourg from that point until the French Revolution in 1789.

  • 04

Church of Saints Peter and Paul

Part of the medieval church collapsed during a Sunday service in July 1787, while the congregation was inside. The rebuilt nave preserved the original tower, which still combines a Romanesque base with Gothic upper levels, and inside sits a rare 14th-century Vierge ouvrante sculpture.

  • 05

    The Tour of the Ramparts

Bishop Berthold of Teck ordered these walls built around 1257, encircling the village with two concentric stone rings separated by a water-filled ditch. The walls average 7 meters in height and still define the outer boundary of the village's circular plan.

  • 06

Eguisheim Vineyard: Grand Cru Eichberg and Pfersigberg

The Eichberg plot takes its name from a document of 1325 that simply called the site 'Bei der Eiche,' meaning 'by the oak tree.' Monks from the Abbey of Marbach were collecting a wine tax on these plots by at least 1389, long before the French Grand Cru appellation system was created in 1975.

  • 07

    Eguisheim Grand Cru Wine Trail

A Roman tile unearthed here in 1900 bears the inscription of a battalion linked to Emperor Diocletian, suggesting that viticulture in Eguisheim may have Roman roots. The 4-kilometer trail today winds through the Eichberg and Pfersigberg Grand Cru plots on south-facing slopes between 220 and 340 meters elevation.
