Audio Guide Guérande

app, one-time €4.99

Guérande is a remarkably intact medieval walled town on the Atlantic coast of Loire-Atlantique, best known for the salt marshes that have supplied Europe with prized fleur de sel since the Iron Age. Its 1,300-metre granite ramparts, built between 1343 and 1490, still encircle the old city almost without a gap, making it one of the most complete medieval fortifications in France.

    Ramparts of Guérande

These 1,300-metre granite walls have stood essentially untouched since their construction between 1343 and 1490, making them among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in France. Six towers and four fortified gates punctuate walls that reach five metres high and three metres thick.

  • 02

    Guérande Salt Marshes

Salt production here stretches back to the Iron Age, and the 3,600-hectare marshes still yield around 12,000 tonnes of coarse salt and 300 tonnes of the prized fleur de sel each year. The landscape, shaped by tidal channels and clay soils, is part of the Natura 2000 network.

  • 03

    Collegiate Church of Saint-Aubin

A place of worship has stood on this site since the 6th century, and by 854 the church already housed relics of Saint-Aubin. In 1365 it was the setting for the Treaty of Guérande, one of the most consequential peace agreements in Breton history.

  • 04

Saint-Michel Gate and Castle-Museum of Guérande

At 24 metres tall, this fortified gatehouse was the main entrance to the city and once served as the residence of the town's captain. Today it houses the Château-Musée de Guérande, tracing the town's history from its medieval foundations.

  • 05

    Careil Castle

Built at the end of the 14th century, this fortified manor blends medieval defensive features with Renaissance detailing added in the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1571 King Charles IX elevated the seigneurie to a châtellenie, and it later became a notable Protestant stronghold during the Wars of Religion.

  • 06

Chapel of Our Lady the White

Dating to the 13th or early 14th century, this is the oldest building inside Guérande's walls. On 4 April 1381 the Second Treaty of Guérande was signed here, confirming Jean IV as Duke of Brittany and ending a phase of the Breton succession conflict.

  • 07

    Saillé (House of Salt Workers)

Founded in 1971 by local salt workers in a disused chapel, this ecomuseum preserves the tools, costumes, and daily rhythms of the paludiers. The village of Saillé itself appears in records as far back as the 11th century under the name 'Saliacum', its identity inseparable from salt.
