Audio Guide Giverny

app, one-time €4.99

Giverny is a small Normandy village whose name is inseparable from Claude Monet, who lived and painted here for 43 years. The gardens he designed became his most enduring subjects, and the village still draws visitors who want to stand where the Water Lilies series began. Beyond the famous estate, a 16th-century mill perched on medieval bridge piers and a former artists' hotel where Cézanne and Renoir once stayed add unexpected texture to a day here.

    Claude Monet's House

Monet bought this house in 1890 for 20,000 francs and spent the next three decades turning it into a 40-metre-long home filled with vivid colour and 243 Japanese woodblock prints. The gardens he created around it, the Clos Normand and the Water Garden, became the subjects he painted more than anything else in his career.

  • 02

    Water Garden

Monet obtained special prefectural permission in 1893 to divert a branch of the Epte River to create this pond, over local objections about water pollution. He then tripled its surface area in 1901, and the resulting light effects on the water drove his entire Water Lilies series.

  • 03

    Clos Normand

What is now a celebrated flower garden was a working orchard when Monet arrived in 1883. He spent four decades reshaping it into a symmetrical tapestry of plants, and after his death it fell to ruin before being fully restored in 1980.

  • 04

    Museum of Impressionisms Giverny

The building opened in 2009 on the site of an earlier American art museum founded in 1992, with rooftop terraces designed to blend into the Seine Valley landscape and gardens laid out in homage to Monet. Its scope covers not just Monet but the full global reach of Impressionism.

  • 05

    Church of Saint Radegund

The semi-circular apse of this church dates to the 11th century, when its patronage was held by the Abbey of Saint-Ouen in Rouen. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 2009, and Monet's family tomb sits in its cemetery just outside the door.

  • 06

    Old Baudy Hotel

It started as a modest grocery-bar until an American painter named Willard Leroy Metcalf turned up in 1886 looking for a room, and within a few years Angélina Baudy had added a dozen guest rooms, north-lit studios, and a rose garden, making it the first establishment in France purpose-built for working painters. Cézanne, Renoir, and Rodin all passed through.

  • 07

    The Old Mill of Vernon

This half-timbered watermill was built in the 16th century on the piers of a 12th-century medieval bridge over the Seine, and it is the last of its kind still standing in this position anywhere in France. It stopped milling in 1849 after hydraulic changes to the river, but Monet painted it and it later appeared in a feature film.
