Audio Guide Rothenburg ob der Tauber
app, one-time €4.99
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the best-preserved medieval walled towns in Germany, its half-timbered streets and intact fortifications largely unchanged since the Thirty Years' War. The town earned Free Imperial City status in 1274, and that independence shaped everything from its Gothic churches to the patrician houses lining Herrngasse. Walk the full 4-kilometre wall circuit, then duck into a cellar museum beneath the Town Hall where the mayor who built this city died without trial in 1408.

01
St. Jacob's Church
Tilman Riemenschneider carved its Heilig-Blut-Altar to house a relic believed to contain drops of Christ's blood, making this Gothic hall church a major pilgrimage stop on the Camino de Santiago. Construction stretched across 173 years, from 1311 to 1485, and the result is one of the most complete late-Gothic interiors in Franconia.

02
Plönlein
The name comes from the Latin planum, meaning simply a small flat place at the fountain, yet this junction of a half-timbered house, a 1385 tower, and a circa-1360 gate has become the single most reproduced image of Rothenburg. The Siebersturm and Kobolzeller Tor guard two different roads down to the Tauber Valley, creating the fork that makes the composition so striking.

03
Town Hall
Two building campaigns separated by a fire produced one Gothic and one Renaissance half standing side by side on the Market Square, a 60-metre tower topping the older wing. Every year the Meistertrunk festival re-enacts the 1631 legend in which the mayor drained a three-litre tankard of wine in one go to save the town from General Tilly's troops.

04
City Wall with Battlement Walk
Nearly four kilometres of covered wall walk run above a fortification that grew in stages from 1172 onward, reaching 42 towers and standing up to seven metres high. Donations from towns as far away as the United States funded repairs after World War II, which damaged over 600 metres of wall in a single 1945 raid.
-
05
Market Square
Rothenburg's civic life has centred on this square since at least 1170, when the market and St. James's Church anchored the new town. The Georgsbrunnen fountain anchoring the square dates to 1446, its twelve-sided basin holding roughly 100,000 litres of water, topped since 1608 by a Saint George slaying a dragon.

06
Toppler's Little Castle
Mayor Heinrich Toppler built this compact moated manor in the Tauber Valley between 1388 and 1390 as a summer residence, a stone base topped by overhanging half-timbered upper floors that make it look almost too small to be serious. He died in 1408 in the town dungeon without ever facing a formal trial, and the pages recording that year were torn from Rothenburg's Black Book.
-
07
Medieval Crime Museum
Housed in a former Knights of St. John commandery built between 1393 and 1410, the museum holds more than 50,000 objects on European legal history, including the Schandflöte, a flute-shaped iron collar clamped around bad musicians as public humiliation. The building was remodelled in Baroque style in 1718, giving it a polished facade that contrasts sharply with what is displayed inside.
