app, one-time €4.99

Merseburg is a compact medieval city on the Saale River whose cathedral hill packs a thousand years of German history into a single ensemble of church, castle, and library. The Merseburg Incantations, the oldest surviving Old High German magic spells, were found here and kept in the very library you can still visit today.

Merseburg Cathedral St. John and St. Lawrence

The oldest surviving Old High German pagan incantations were hidden for centuries inside this cathedral's archive before anyone realised what they were. Founded in 1015 and consecrated in 1021 by Emperor Henry II, the 75-metre-long building layers Romanesque vaults, Gothic netting, and a Baroque high altar into one continuous record of changing tastes.

  • 02

    Merseburg Castle

A Frankish stronghold stood on this ridge as early as the 8th century, and the site has never stopped being important. Bishop Thilo von Trotha turned it into a three-winged Renaissance palace between 1470 and 1500, with the cathedral itself forming the fourth wing of the courtyard.

  • 03

    Cathedral Chapter Library

The Merseburg Incantations, two 10th-century spells invoking Norse gods Wotan and Phol, sat unnoticed in this library for centuries until a scholar found them in 1841. The collection spans roughly 1,200 years and holds over 10,000 printed works alongside 200 manuscripts in a late-Gothic Kapitelhaus.

  • 04

    Merseburg Palace Garden

Duke Christian I laid out this two-hectare Baroque garden around 1660, and Peter Joseph Lenné later reshaped it into a landscape park in the 1820s, though his full design was never completely realised. The garden's Schlossgartensalon, built in 1727 to 1735, went on to host the first sittings of the Prussian provincial parliament from 1825.

  • 05

    Old Town Hall Merseburg

A devastating fire in 1444 destroyed the original hall and cost the city its municipal privileges. The rebuilt structure, finished in stages between 1478 and 1568, stitches late Gothic stonework together with Renaissance portals added by master builder Nickel Hoffmann from Halle.

  • 06

    Raven Cage

Bishop Thilo von Trotha ordered a cage of live ravens kept in the castle forecourt as a permanent reminder of a wrongful execution he had ordered, according to the Merseburg Raven Legend. The original wooden cage was replaced in stone between 1887 and 1890, and a nine-metre aviary was added in 2006; the ravens are still there.

  • 07

    Gotthard Pond

What is now a 5.8-hectare park with 14,500 roses and a 1907 fountain began as a quarry and was converted into a monastery fishery by Bishop Thilo von Trotha in 1483. The Thuringian Railway sliced it in two in 1846, creating the distinct front and rear ponds that exist today.
