Audio Guide Sète

Sète sits on a narrow strip of land between the Mediterranean and the Thau Lagoon, earning it the nickname 'the Venice of Languedoc.' Born in a single royal decree in 1666, the city grew around its canals and fishing culture, and gave France two of its most beloved voices: poet Paul Valéry and singer-songwriter Georges Brassens, both buried here within sight of the sea.

01
Royal Canal
Laid out in 1666 on the orders of Louis XIV, this waterway was the very reason Sète existed: a Mediterranean outlet for the Canal des Deux-Mers. Every summer it becomes an arena for nautical jousting, a tradition that has continued since the city's founding.
-
02
Mont Saint-Clair
Once an island in the Mediterranean, this 175-metre limestone hill gradually fused to the mainland and, in doing so, created the Thau Lagoon below it. From the top you see the sea on one side and the lagoon on the other, with the Croix de Saint-Clair lit up at night.
-
03
Marine Cemetery
Founded around 1680 to bury the workers who built Sète's first breakwater, this terraced cemetery was renamed in 1945 after Paul Valéry's poem 'Le Cimetière marin,' and Valéry himself is buried here, overlooking the sea he spent a lifetime writing about.

04
Saint-Louis Mole
The very first stone of Sète was laid here on 29 July 1666: a 650-metre jetty built from rock quarried off Mont Saint-Clair to shelter the new port from Mediterranean storms. The annual Saint-Louis festival, with its water jousting tournaments, still centres on this pier.

05
Théâtre de la Mer Jean-Vilar
Before it hosted concerts and Jazz à Sète, this open-air venue was Fort Saint-Pierre, built between 1743 and 1746 to defend the port after an English attack, and later used as a prison for Arab captives during the Algerian conquest. The stage backdrop is the open Mediterranean.
-
06
La Pointe Courte
Agnès Varda shot her very first film here in 1954-55, putting this tight-knit fishermen's quarter between the Canal Royal and the Thau Lagoon on the cultural map. The community, known locally as 'les Pointus,' only officially purchased the land from the city in 1969.
-
07
Tomb of Georges Brassens
Brassens wrote an entire song asking to be buried on the Corniche beach under a parasol pine so friends could visit without getting sunstroke. He ended up at Cimetière Le Py instead, but the pine was planted there in 1996 anyway, fifteen years after his death.
