Audio Guide Uzès

Uzès is one of southern France's most intact medieval towns, sitting in the Gard département of Occitanie with a skyline still shaped by three rival feudal towers. It earned the title "Premier Duché de France" in 1565, and its springs once fed the Roman aqueduct that ends at the Pont du Gard, 50 kilometres away.

01
Fenestrelle Tower
The only circular-plan Romanesque church tower in all of France, it modelled itself on Italian Lombard campaniles and survived the Wars of Religion when the rest of its cathedral did not. The 42-metre limestone tower stands as the sole remnant of the Cathedral of Saint-Théodorit, destroyed by Calvinists in 1621.
-
02
Place aux Herbes
The arcades ringing this square conceal Gothic vaults and, beneath them, former limestone quarries. Markets have been held here since 1241, and the square cycled through five official names before settling on Place aux Herbes as recently as 1978.

03
Uzès Historical Centre
Archaeological digs in 2017 uncovered a full Roman neighbourhood north of the medieval centre, complete with mosaics, hypocausts, and streets dating to the late 2nd century BCE. The town was elevated from a county to a duchy by King Charles IX in 1565, giving it precedence in royal court ceremonies above all other French duchies.

04
Eure Fountain
Ten perennial springs northeast of Uzès once powered the entire Roman water supply for Nîmes via a 50-kilometre aqueduct, the Pont du Gard being its most famous stretch. The aqueduct ran from the 1st century AD until it ceased permanently in the 6th century; the springs still flow at up to 1,300 litres per second today.

05
Jean Racine Promenade
The playwright Jean Racine spent 1661 to 1662 in Uzès with his uncle, a canon sent to steer him away from Parisian literary circles and toward an ecclesiastical career. The belvedere pavilion built on the old rampart tower in 1681 was only named after him well after the fact, making the connection more legend than plan.
-
06
Haribo Candy Museum
Before gummy bears arrived, this 12th-century water mill was producing Zan liquorice from 1862 onward; Haribo acquired the Uzès site in 1987 and turned it into a museum in 1996. Roughly 200,000 people visit each year, drawn partly by the preserved mill wheels and stone structures still visible inside.
-
07
Hôtel du Baron de Castille
Baron Gabriel-Joseph de Froment d'Argilliers returned from Italy so taken with ancient Roman architecture that he rebuilt his family property between 1809 and 1818 with a full peristyle of columns, on the very site where the bishops of Uzès had once minted coins. Fragments of the original 15th and 16th-century mint building are still embedded in the walls.
