Audio Guide Rocamadour
app, one-time €4.99
Rocamadour clings to a sheer limestone cliff above the Alzou canyon, a spectacle so striking that pilgrims have been making their way here since the 12th century. At its heart is a sanctuary complex built directly into the rock, home to a Black Madonna said to have performed miracles, a legendary sword lodged in a cliff face, and 216 steps that the devout still climb on their knees.

01
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Rocamadour
A papal bull from 1105 already acknowledged this pilgrimage site, and when the intact body of Saint Amadour was found in a nearby tomb in 1166, the crowds never really stopped coming. Built directly into the Alzou canyon cliffs, the complex holds a basilica, a crypt, and seven chapels centred on a revered 12th-century Black Madonna.
-
02
Chapel of Our Lady
A rockfall destroyed the original chapel in 1476, and the rebuilt Flamboyant Gothic structure houses two things pilgrims travel across France to see: the Black Virgin statue and a bell said to ring on its own to announce miracles at sea. Wars of Religion and the Revolution both left their mark before 19th-century restorers stepped in.
-
03
Grand Staircase
These 216 limestone steps, cut mainly in the 12th century, connect the lower town to the sanctuaries above, and tradition holds that the truly penitent climb them on their knees. The staircase forms the spine of the entire pilgrimage and links the street level directly to the chapel parvis.

04
Rocamadour Castle
Sitting 70 to 80 metres above the sanctuary on a bare limestone plateau, this 13th-century fortress was built specifically to protect the pilgrimage complex during the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of Religion. Three towers and connecting ramparts survey the entire Alzou Valley below.

05
Durandal
A 76.5-centimetre iron replica of Roland's legendary sword from the Chanson de Roland is embedded in the cliff face between two chapels, placed there to honour the paladin of Charlemagne. The original was sold in 1785, the replica was stolen in 2024, and its absence made headlines, which says something about how seriously locals take a mythical sword lodged in a rock.
-
06
Cave of Wonders
A 14-year-old girl slipped through a hole that opened in her family's garden in October 1920 and inadvertently uncovered a Paleolithic decorated cave with paintings and engravings dating back over 20,000 years. The main chamber stretches 45 by 25 metres and has been open to visitors since 1921.
-
07
Canyon of the Alzou
In the Middle Ages this deep, shaded gorge was known as the "Vallée ténébreuse" (Dark Valley), a name earned by the narrow limestone walls that block out the light. The Alzou River actually disappears underground in karst sections between Gramat and Rocamadour, resurfacing further along, and the whole corridor is now a Natura 2000 conservation area.
