Audio Guide Mougins

app, one-time €4.99

Mougins is a hilltop village in the South of France where medieval stone lanes meet a serious culinary and artistic legacy. Picasso spent his last years here, a three-Michelin-star restaurant grew out of a 16th-century olive mill, and a pond holds Europe's largest colony of sacred lotus flowers.

    Old Village of Mougins

Inhabited since the Neolithic period and later a Roman waypoint on the Via Aurelia, this hilltop village passed into the hands of the Abbey of Lérins in 1056 and stayed there until the French Revolution. Its spiral medieval layout, perched at 260 metres, drew Picasso for his final years and chef Roger Vergé for his landmark restaurant.

  • 02

    Sarrazine Gate

Of the three fortified gates that once sealed the medieval village, only this one survives; the other two were demolished in the 18th century. Classified as a monument historique in 1942, it now houses the Mougins Photography Center rather than standing as a ruin.

  • 03

Church of Saint James the Greater

Its sacristy and altar stone date to the 11th century, and the bell tower was later converted into a terrace offering panoramic views across the surrounding hills. The church holds a 15th-century polychrome wood crucifix alongside 18th-century statues added during later expansions.

  • 04

    Le Moulin de Mougins

A 16th-century olive mill used by the lords of Roquefort became, in 1969, the kitchen where Roger Vergé invented his "Cuisine du Soleil" style and earned three Michelin stars by 1974. The building retained its rustic character through that transformation and through a subsequent renovation costing an estimated 25 to 30 million euros.

  • 05

FAMM - Women Artists of the Mougins Museum

The medieval building that once served as the village prison, then a mill, then a private residence, reopened on 21 June 2024 as the first private European museum dedicated exclusively to women artists. Its four floors now show works by around 90 artists including Frida Kahlo, Berthe Morisot, and Lee Krasner.

  • 06

    Fontmerle Pond

The sacred lotus colony covering this five-hectare pond is the largest in Europe, planted in the 1960s by film architect Maurice Gridaine, who had earlier planned a "city of cinema" here with Jean Cocteau, Jean Marais, and Marcel Pagnol that was never built. The pond also shelters over 70 bird species and one of the region's populations of the European pond turtle.

  • 07

    Chapel of Saint Bartholomew

Built in the 10th century reportedly to calm apocalyptic fears as the year 1000 approached, this chapel has an octagonal plan that is rare in religious architecture anywhere in France. Listed as a Monument Historique in 1941, it was fully restored in 2021 and hosts a village feast every 24 August.
