Audio Guide Antibes

app, one-time €4.99

Antibes sits at the edge of the French Riviera with over 2,600 years of layered history packed into its old town ramparts. Greek traders, Roman engineers, Vauban's military genius, and Picasso's brushes all left their mark on the same stretch of Mediterranean coastline. The result is a place where a billion-dollar superyacht marina shares a harbour wall with a medieval cathedral built on a Roman temple.

    Fort Carré

Napoleon Bonaparte was once held prisoner here, and the star-shaped fort he later knew so well was already four decades old by then. Built from the 1550s under Henri II to guard France's frontier with Savoy, Fort Carré rises 26 metres above the sea and remains one of the most complete examples of Renaissance military architecture on the Riviera.

  • 02

    Picasso Museum, Grimaldi Castle

Picasso arrived in Antibes in 1946 with almost no materials, so the curator of this castle handed him the building itself to use as a studio. The works he produced that autumn, now the core of the permanent collection, have never left.

  • 03

    Port Vauban and Billionaires' Quay

Europe's largest yachting harbour by tonnage was originally a Phocaean trading post where Greek, Etruscan, and Rhodian amphorae have been found in the seabed. Today it holds 1,500 mooring places for vessels up to 165 metres long.

  • 04

Ramparts of Antibes and Admiral-de-Grasse Promenade

These walls began as Greek fortifications in the mid-6th century BCE, were reinforced by the Romans, and were finally modernised by Vauban in the 17th century. Walking the 542-metre seafront promenade means standing on nearly three thousand years of continuous defence.

  • 05

Cathedral of Our Lady of the Platea

Beneath this cathedral's floor lie the foundations of a Roman temple, possibly dedicated to Diana or Minerva, and beneath that a 5th-century paleo-Christian double church. The 30-metre bell tower was built partly from recycled Roman stones.

  • 06

    The Nomad, Saint-Jaume Bastion

Catalan sculptor Jaume Plensa built this 8-metre seated figure entirely from white-painted stainless steel letters, so the body of the work is literally made of language. Placed temporarily in 2007, the city bought it permanently in 2010 and it now gazes out over the Mediterranean from the old bastion wall.

  • 07

    Free Commune of Safranier

In 1966 a group of neighbours in the old town declared their narrow, flower-hung alleyways a self-governing commune, complete with a mayor and an annual harvest festival, though it holds no actual administrative power. The tongue-in-cheek republic is still active today, with its third mayor in office since 2014.
