Audio Guide Étretat

app, one-time €4.99

Étretat is a small Norman village whose chalk cliffs have stopped painters, writers, and travelers in their tracks for centuries. The Porte d'Aval arch and the solitary Needle rising from the sea are among the most reproduced coastal images in France. Monet painted them repeatedly; Maupassant grew up in their shadow and built a villa here. The village packs a surprising amount of story into a short stretch of coastline.

    Cliffs of Étretat

Formed from chalk laid down roughly 90 million years ago, these cliffs rise between 70 and 100 metres and have been drawing artists including Monet since the 19th century. They attract around 3 million visitors a year and are protected under the Natura 2000 network.

  • 02

    Porte d'Aval

Writers have compared this arch to an elephant dipping its trunk into the sea, a description that makes immediate sense when you stand on the beach below it. Carved from Turonian chalk by marine erosion over millennia, it frames the free-standing Needle just beyond.

  • 03

    The Needle of Étretat

Maurice Leblanc imagined a hollow version of this 50-metre sea stack as the hiding place of Arsène Lupin's treasure, and the legend stuck so firmly that visitors still half-believe it today. The Needle is a remnant of a collapsed cliff arch, shaped from Upper Cretaceous chalk around 85 million years ago.

  • 04

Chapel of Our Lady of the Guard

The nave of this clifftop chapel is deliberately shaped like a ship's hull, and the gargoyles are carved as fish, details that reflect its original purpose as a memorial to sailors lost at sea. Destroyed in 1942 during the German occupation, it was rebuilt in 1950 and is now a listed contemporary architectural landmark.

  • 05

    Nungesser and Coli Monument

On 8 May 1927, aviators Charles Nungesser and François Coli flew their biplane over this exact clifftop at 6:48 AM, heading west across the Atlantic toward New York, and were never seen again. The 24-metre leaning concrete spire erected in 1962 marks the last confirmed sighting of their aircraft.

  • 06

Le Clos Lupin, Maison Maurice Leblanc

Maurice Leblanc rented this Anglo-Norman half-timbered villa in 1915 and bought it in 1918, writing much of the Arsène Lupin series within its walls. German forces requisitioned it during World War II after Leblanc fled, and his granddaughter later restored it; it has been a literary museum since 1999.

  • 07

    The Old Market

When architect Émile Maugé unveiled this timber-framed market hall between 1926 and 1928, locals complained loudly about the cost; today it is the social heart of the village and a textbook example of the interwar 'normandisation' movement that deliberately shaped Étretat's architectural identity. The wood used in its construction came from Brionne.
