Cabourg is a Belle Époque seaside resort on the Normandy coast where Marcel Proust spent every summer from 1907 to 1914, turning the town into the fictional Balbec in his novel In Search of Lost Time. The fan-shaped street plan, drawn up in 1853, still funnels every avenue toward the Grand Hotel and the sea, making the town feel like it was designed for a single slow promenade.

    Grand Hotel of Cabourg

Marcel Proust occupied room 414 here every summer for seven years, and the hotel became his template for the fictional resort of Balbec. Rebuilt in 1907 by architects Lucien Viraut and Émile Mauclerc in full Beaux-Arts style, it remains the centerpiece of the Cabourg seafront.

  • 02

    Marcel Proust Promenade

Before it was renamed in 1971, this 3.6-kilometer seafront walk was called Boulevard de l'Impératrice and then Promenade des Anglais. It runs the length of the Belle Époque waterfront and was the daily backdrop for Proust's summer stays at the Grand Hotel next door.

  • 03

The Fan and the Casino Gardens

The entire street plan of Cabourg was laid out in 1853 as a fan radiating from this central garden toward the sea, inspired by Greco-Roman theater design. Every avenue in town converges here, making the gardens the geometric and social heart of the resort.

  • 04

    Les Halles de Dives-sur-Mer

Dendrochronological analysis conducted in 2012 dated these oak-pillared market halls to between 1405 and 1423, making them one of the best-preserved medieval timber market buildings in Normandy. Sixty-six oak pillars on stone blocks hold up the 50-meter structure, which still hosts a weekly market.

  • 05

Church of Our Lady of Dives-sur-Mer

A plaque inside lists the companions of William the Conqueror who departed from Dives in 1066, and the church carries a pilgrimage tradition dating to 1001, when local fishermen reportedly recovered a miraculous statue from the water. The building blends Romanesque pillars from the 11th century with later Gothic additions.

  • 06

    The Meridian of Love

Inaugurated on 8 June 2016 to mark the 30th edition of Cabourg's Festival du Film Romantique, this public artwork embeds 104 compass-point nails along the entire 3.6-kilometer promenade and displays the word love in 104 languages on five columns. Most visitors walk the promenade without realizing they are inside an open-air museum.

  • 07

    Cabourg Hippodrome

Horse races have been held in the Cabourg area since 1870, but what makes the current track unusual is its surface: pink sand sourced from Mouen, which gives the 1,275-meter circuit its distinctive color and distinctive running conditions. The summer nocturnal race evenings, known as the Estivales, have been a fixture since the hippodrome moved to its present site in 1929.
