Audio Guide Céret

app, one-time €4.99

Céret is a small Catalan town in the French Pyrenees that punches well above its weight in art history: Picasso, Braque, and Matisse all worked here, earning it the nickname 'the Mecca of Cubism.' Its medieval bridges, bullfighting traditions, and cherry festivals give it a character that goes far beyond a single identity.

    Devil's Bridge (Old Bridge)

When it was completed in 1341, this single stone arch spanning 45.45 metres was the longest of its kind in the world, a record that came with an obligatory legend about a deal with the devil. Built during the reign of the Kings of Majorca, it has been a classified Monument Historique since 1840.

  • 02

Museum of Modern Art of Céret

Founded in 1948 inside a former 17th-century Carmelite convent that previously served as a gendarmerie barracks and a prison, this museum holds works by Picasso and Matisse who both spent time in Céret. A 2022 expansion added 1,300 square metres of exhibition space.

  • 03

    Saint Peter's Church of Céret

First mentioned in a decree of Emperor Louis the Pious in 814, this 50-metre-long church layers four distinct architectural phases onto one another, from a pre-Romanesque core to a Baroque dome modelled on Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. A Catalan inscription on the Gothic portal records its installation to the year 1398.

  • 04

    France Gate and Spain Gate

Two medieval town gates, one facing France and one facing Spain, that mark Céret's centuries-long position as a border town between two kingdoms. Built under the Kingdom of Majorca between the 13th and 15th centuries, they passed to French control only after the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659.

  • 05

    War Memorial 'The Pain'

Aristide Maillol chose to represent grief rather than heroism for Céret's 1922 war memorial: a seated female figure in light-grey sandstone honouring 161 local soldiers lost in World War I. A bronze version of the same figure stands in Paris, and the Céret original is classified as a Monument Historique.

  • 06

    Fountain of the Nine Jets

Built in 1313 on the order of King Sanç I of Majorca, this granite fountain has been quietly recording the town's political shifts ever since: in 1479 Ferdinand II of Aragon added a sculpted lion to its base, and after 1659 Louis XIV had the lion reoriented to face France. It was listed as a Monument historique in 1910 and restored in 2013.

  • 07

    La Capelleta

Above the entrance to this 1649 hospital chapel sits a 14th-century white marble Crucifixion that actually predates the building around it. In 1985 the decommissioned chapel was transformed into a contemporary arts venue and fitted with new stained glass by Alfred Manessier.
