Maulbronn Monastery is one of the best-preserved medieval monastic complexes north of the Alps, founded by Cistercian monks in 1147 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Its mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture spans centuries, and its alumni roll includes Johannes Kepler and Friedrich Hölderlin. Maulbronn Monastery

Founded in 1147 by twelve Cistercian monks from Alsace, this walled complex grew into one of the most complete medieval monasteries north of the Alps, blending Romanesque and Gothic styles across nearly nine centuries of continuous use. Its 1993 UNESCO inscription recognised both its architecture and an extraordinary water-management system that the monks built from scratch.

    The Paradise (Vestibule)

Built around 1220 by an anonymous builder known only as the 'Paradiesmeister,' this sandstone narthex introduced Early Gothic forms to southwest Germany, drawing directly on northern French models. The name 'Paradies' follows a medieval tradition of calling the entrance space before a church a paradise, a threshold between the world and the sacred.

  • 03

    Protestant Seminary Maulbronn

When Duke Christoph of Württemberg converted the monastery into a Protestant school in 1556, he set in motion an educational legacy that produced Johannes Kepler and Friedrich Hölderlin among its alumni. The seminary still operates inside the medieval complex today.

  • 04

    Faust Tower

Built around 1300 as a plain defensive tower, it was given a timber-framed upper storey in 1604 and later became linked to the legend of Johann Georg Faust, who is said to have stayed at the monastery. The tower stands at the southeast corner of the fortification walls and its interior is not open to visitors, which only adds to its air of mystery.

Deep Lake and the Maulbronn Water System

The monks who arrived in 1147 immediately set about reshaping the hydrology of their valley, eventually creating a network of over twenty lakes, ponds, ditches, and canals to supply water, farm fish, and drive the cloister mill. The Tiefer See, covering 2.2 hectares and holding 70,000 cubic metres of water, is the centrepiece of that system and is now a public swimming lake.
