Audio Guide Mannheim
app, one-time €4.99
Mannheim is the only major German city built on a strict grid, its streets identified by letters and numbers instead of names, a layout dating back to 1607. That same restless inventiveness produced the bicycle, the automobile, and one of Europe's grandest Baroque palaces, all within a few kilometres of each other.

Baroque Palace Mannheim
One of Europe's longest Baroque facades at 440 metres was built from scratch in 1720 after Elector Carl Philipp simply relocated his entire seat of power from Heidelberg to Mannheim. The palace became the cradle of the Mannheim School of music before wartime bombs gutted it, and today it draws around 100,000 visitors a year.
-
02
Mannheim Water Tower
A 23-year-old architect won the 1885 design competition against 73 other entries with a neo-Baroque sandstone tower that critics initially mocked. Built for 2.374 million marks, it pumped the city's water supply for over a century before becoming Mannheim's most recognised symbol.

03
Jesuit Church St. Ignatius and Francis Xavier
Construction of this 75-metre domed Baroque church began in 1733, stalled for years due to funding shortages, and was only consecrated in 1760, nearly three decades later. The interior houses sculptural work by both Peter Anton von Verschaffelt and Egid Quirin Asam, two of the period's leading hands.

04
National Theatre Mannheim
Friedrich Schiller's play Die Räuber had its world premiere on this stage in 1782, an event that put Mannheim on the literary map of Europe. The original building was destroyed in World War II and replaced in 1957 with a modernist structure 133 metres long.

05
Friedrichsplatz
The square took shape in the 1870s around a water tower that was not yet built, with architects designing the arcaded buildings to frame a centerpiece that would arrive only in 1889. The resulting ensemble of neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture was named after Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden, known for his liberal reforms.
-
06
Multihalle
Built in 1974 to 1975 as a temporary structure for the Bundesgartenschau, this wooden grid-shell designed by Frei Otto is still the largest self-supporting timber lattice roof in the world. It became one of the youngest buildings in Germany to be listed as a cultural monument, receiving that status in 1998.
-
07
Old Observatory
The walls of this 1772 Baroque observatory are 2.25 metres thick, built to keep instruments perfectly stable, and the guest list during its active years included Mozart and Thomas Jefferson. It stopped doing science in 1880 and now hosts artists' studios after a careful restoration completed in 2016.
