Audio Guide Hamelin

app, one-time €4.99

Hamelin is best known as the city of the Pied Piper, where a legend from 1284 says 130 children vanished after a rat-catcher led them away through the streets. That story shaped the entire old town, which fills up with some of the finest Weser Renaissance buildings in Germany. The architecture alone would make a visit worthwhile, but the layers of history go considerably deeper.

    Rat Catcher's House

The building carries an inscription referencing the 1284 legend, yet it was built more than three centuries later, in 1602-1603, by town councillor Hermann Arendes. Its ornate sandstone facade, half-timbering, and two-story bay window make it the most photographed example of Weser Renaissance architecture in the city.

  • 02

    Wedding House

The last stone building erected in Hamelin's Weser Renaissance style, finished in 1617 just as the Thirty Years' War began to choke off the prosperity that made it possible. Its glockenspiel still plays out the Pied Piper story, and the building has hosted civil weddings since 1972.

  • 03

    Market Church St. Nicolai

The foundations of an earlier church, found roughly two metres below today's floor during 1957-1959 reconstruction, show that worship on this spot began in the early 12th century. The 60-metre tower and stained-glass windows are the most visible result of nearly nine centuries of rebuilding.

  • 04

    St. Boniface Minster

Founded around 800 AD as a private church by Saxon nobles, this minster passed to the Benedictine Abbey of Fulda when its founders died without heirs in 826. Its crypt is one of the oldest surviving structures in the city, and the building blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements accumulated across more than a thousand years.

  • 05

Pied Piper Fountain at Town Hall Square

Karl Ulrich Nuss's bronze fountain came second in a public competition that drew 132 entries, yet it is his design that ended up here, after the winner's concept proved impossible to execute. Originally planned for the Pferdemarkt, it was moved to Rathausplatz because it turned out to be larger than the organisers had expected.

  • 06

    Haspelmath Tower

When Napoleon ordered Hamelin's fortifications demolished in 1808, nearly all 22 towers and the nine-metre city wall came down. This tower, built around 1450, was one of only two to survive, and in the 19th century it became the city's first private museum before finding its current life as an art gallery.

  • 07

    Garrison Church

Built in 1713-1714 to serve Prussian soldiers, the church acquired its local nickname 'Grüner Reiter' (Green Rider) from the oxidised copper roof turret that turned green over the centuries. It closed as a church in 1852 and has been a bank branch since 1929, making it one of the more unusual repurposed Baroque buildings in Lower Saxony.
