Audio Guide Amboise

app, one-time €4.99

Amboise sits where the Loire bends beneath a cliff-top royal château that shaped the French Renaissance. Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years here, and the town is compact enough to walk its full story in a day. From a surrealist fountain on the riverbank to troglodyte houses carved straight into the hillside, every street holds a layer of history most visitors walk straight past.

    Royal Château of Amboise

Perched 40 meters above the Loire, this was the residence where the French court first fell in love with Italian Renaissance style after Charles VIII returned from Naples in 1492. It also hosted Leonardo da Vinci as a guest of Francis I, and the Saint-Hubert Chapel on its terrace is believed to hold Leonardo's remains.

  • 02

Clos Lucé Castle and Leonardo da Vinci Park

Leonardo da Vinci lived out his last three years here, from 1516 until his death in 1519, invited personally by King Francis I. The gardens are laid out around sketches from his notebooks, making it a rare place where his engineering imagination takes physical form.

  • 03

    Chanteloup Pagoda

A disgraced minister built this 44-meter chinoiserie tower in 1775 after being exiled from court by Louis XV, and inscribed on it the names of every friend who still came to visit him. The château it once stood beside was demolished and sold for parts, leaving the pagoda alone in the forest as a monument to loyalty.

  • 04

    Collegiate Church of Saint-Denis

Built from 1107 on a site that began as a pagan temple and was then converted by Saint Martin in the 4th century, this Romanesque church was the setting where Louis XII's first marriage was annulled in 1498, clearing the way for his remarriage and reshaping French dynastic politics.

  • 05

    Saint-Hubert Chapel

This small flamboyant Gothic chapel, completed around 1493, is just 12 meters long yet holds what is believed to be the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci, whose remains were moved here in 1863. A 3.5 million euro restoration finished in 2024 has returned its delicate tuffeau stonework to its original condition.

  • 06

    Caesar's Granaries

Local tradition blamed Julius Caesar for these four bell-shaped silos carved into the tuffeau hillside, but 19th-century historians flatly disproved the story: they were actually built in 1548 by a local landowner to store grain tithes. The Roman nickname stuck anyway, and the ingenious brick-lined, moisture-resistant design earned them listed monument status in 1948.

  • 07

    Max Ernst Fountain

Commissioned in 1967 and inaugurated in 1968, this surrealist bronze fountain on the Loire quay was one of Max Ernst's rare works for a public space, assembling bronze tortoises and frogs from his personal bestiary around a central Genius figure. Ernst had been living in the Touraine since 1954 and embedded a quiet tribute to Leonardo da Vinci in the circular details of its design.
